Veterinary Rehabilitation

Veterinary rehabilitation is not just for recovery, it is for helping animals live their best lives. I concentrate on helping your dog or cats:

Recover from surgery or neurologic injuries;

Improve mobility, strength, flexibility, and endurance;

Improve overall fitness;

Manage pain;

Reduce the risk of future injury;

Helping senior animals stay active and pain-free;

Thrive and optimize overall health and longevity.

My Rehabilitation Toolkit includes: Laser Therapy (Photobiomodulation), Therapeutic Exercise, Massage and Stretching, Hydrotherapy (Underwater Treadmill) Coming Summer 2026! Acupuncture.

Safety is always a priority. It is essential to have your dog or cat's full medical history reviewed and the approval of your primary veterinarian or veterinary specialist before starting a rehabilitation program. Some underlying diseases, such as heart, lung or airway disease rehabilitation therapy can be physically taxing and can cause harm.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be helpful for many conditions. The procedure involves placing needles, applying laser stimulation, or injecting fluids to specific points on your body.

The stimulation of those points can increase blood flow, decrease inflammation, and release natural painkillers. It helps the body by decreasing pain, promotes supports natural healing, and reduces muscle tension.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, pain stems from a blockage in the body’s flow of energy (Qi) and disease is often the result of imbalances. Acupuncture helps regulate the body bringing it back into balance by addressing specific points.

Useful for managing conditions such as: Cancer,  side effects of  Cancer treatments, Digestive Problems, Kidney and Urinary Tract Problems, Liver and Heart problems, Skin conditions, Allergies, Neurologic disorders, Pain management, Osteoarthritis, Musculoskeletal conditions, Myofascial trigger points, General wellness and health support

Is acupuncture safe? It is generally considered safe.  I only use sterile single-use needles.

However, it may be contraindicated in some patients:

bleeding disorders, immunodeficiencies, pregnancy,  and some cancers.

Adverse events are not common.

Reported events include infection and needle ingestion.

What is Balance Method Acupuncture?

This is a unique method developed by Dr. Richard Teh-Fu Tan rooted in Classical Eastern philosophy. It uses distal points helping the body restore balance supporting its own healing. It is noted for its rapid results with less needles.

Laser Therapy - Photobiomodulation

Certain wavelengths of light can affect   tissues at the cellular levels. This light, in the form of photons, can help cells produce more cellular energy which helps cells repair and grow. It can help improve blood flow, decrease inflammation, promote healing, and manage pain.

I use a class IV non-thermal laser.

Conditions treated:  pain, inflammation, swelling, osteoarthritis, musculoskeletal injury, neurologic disorders, wound healing, gingivitis/stomatitis.

Is Laser Therapy safe? Eye protection is essential and protective eye wear is provided. Laser can damage the eye (retina). Burns can happen with some types of lasers.

Contraindicated directly over a tumor, area of bleeding, pregnant uterus, or growth plates. Animals diagnosed with lymphoma and other cancers or taking immunosuppressant medications should not be treated with laser.

MEET DR. LISA TIEBER (anD Tallulah)

My journey into neurorehabilitation began during my undergraduate studies at Santa Clara University, where I assisted in a program for people recovering from brain injuries.  My early fascination with neurological recovery, paired with a deep-seated desire to help animals, led me to Iowa State University, where I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.

After completing an internship at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in New York City, I pursued a specialized neurology clerkship in Detroit, where I also mentored veterinary interns in emergency care. I went on to complete my residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery at Auburn University, becoming board-certified in Veterinary Neurology in 2006.

I believe that the best care comes from a place of deep understanding. Beyond my clinical work, I am a dedicated Science Instructor and Lecturer,  Sharing my knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, Endocrinology, Pathophysiology, and Neuroscience with local community college and university students.

Currently, I serve as an Adjunct Faculty Member at San Francisco State University in the Pre-Health Professions Post-Baccalaureate Program.  I have been teaching Neuroscience in the program for over 9 years and love how it keeps me at the forefront of the field.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

While I am a trained veterinary neurologist/neurosurgeon, I realized that more can be done to help animals recover from an injury.   Driven by a desire to provide improved outcomes for my patients- and recognizing the vital role of preventative care for conditions like Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD) – I have spent the last two decades advancing my training:

  • Certified in Canine Rehabilitation: Focused on restoring mobility, neurologic function, and strength with strategies such as therapeutic exercise, stretching, hydrotherapy with certification through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute.

  • Certified in Multiple Acupuncture Methods: Including Veterinary Balance Method Acupuncture through Chi University and Veterinary Acupuncture through the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) certifications.

  • Palliative Care and End-of-Life Practitioner: Certified in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine Palliative and End-of-Life care (CTPEP) through Chi University.

Bringing the Clinic to You

After working in several Bay Area hospitals and a holistic house-call practice in the Napa Valley, I am excited to launch my house-call practice serving Sonoma County. My goal is to eliminate the stress of the clinic by providing acupuncture, cold laser therapy, and  physical rehabilitation in the comfort of your own home.

Collaborative Care & First Visits

Collaborative Care

For optimal care of your dog or cat working with your primary veterinarian is essential. I will provide your veterinarian with updated reports. I do not offer lab testing or diagnostic imaging (X-rays, CT scan), but I may recommend specific blood tests or X-rays that can be performed at your primary veterinarian’s practice.

What to Expect During Your First Visit

Recent Surgery

If your dog or cat has had surgery within the last 6 months be sure to have your veterinary surgeon’s medical records as well as their approval for physical rehabilitation services submitted with your appointment request.

Pre-Visit Intake

Prior to each visit it I ask that you complete an intake questionnaire and provide me with your dog or cat’s medical records.

Initial Consultation and  Examination

I perform a complete physical examination including a neurologic exam and orthopedic exam and obtain measurements of joint angles (goniometry) and girth to get baseline values for your dog or cat depending on the nature of your dog or cat’s condition. This helps us see if we get improvement with your animal’s treatment plan.

A Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medical (TCVM) examination may also be performed depending on your goals. The TCVM exam involves examining of the pulse, tongue, and obtaining more details of your dog or cat’s history.

Comfort & Stress Management
Your Customized Plan

My goal with every patient is to do a thorough examination as well as minimize stress.   This is especially  important for patients receiving acpuncture treatments and rehabilitation therapy.     I have several ways to help decrease stress - from the use of calming pheromone sprays and essential oils to having tasty treats.   In rare instances I may not be able to complete parts of the exam, such as  joint angle measurements.  I will be sure to discuss alternative options with you at the time of the visit.

Based on your dog or cat’s condition, goals, and plan I may teach you acupressure, massage, stretching, therapeutic exercises. An initial acupuncture treatment or cold laser treatment may also be performed.
